Mountains offer a majestic escape for families. Fresh air, stunning scenery, and endless opportunities for adventure await! But how do you plan a mountain trip that keeps everyone, especially the little ones, entertained? Here are some ideas to spark joy and create lasting memories on your mountain adventure:
Hiking
Grab a local field guide, a notebook and some crayons then hit the trails! Along the way identify the plants and animals you see by using the guide. When you see an animal try to draw it in the notebook, when you collect a leaf take a rubbing of it. Label everything to create your own field guide.
Fishing
For adults, fishing could be the most relaxing thing on this list. For kids, it’s hard work. Teach your kids patience by going fishing at a local lake. Before going, take some time to learn the different species of fish so that you can amaze your children with your extensive knowledge of the different fish in your area.
Kayaking
Paddling is great exercise and an even better way of tiring out the kids. Go explore the coves, the far side of the lake, maybe do some fishing. Kayaking with the family is always a great time.
Bike Rides
Another great way to tire out your kids while getting some exercise is to go on a bike ride. Stop at the local
Stargazing
Look up the constellations in the sky and go out and look for them. If you stare long enough you’ll see a shooting star. Many constellations have mythological stories that your kids will love.
Junior Rangers
Many national parks have fantastic Junior Ranger programs. These programs offer activity booklets packed with information about the park’s plants, animals, and history. Kids will have a blast completing activities and earning badges, all while becoming junior park stewards. Once a booklet is completed your kids can turn them in for a Jr. Park Ranger badge.
Historic Sites
Visiting historic sites brings history to life. Check out battlefields, forts, museums, or old mine towns. Look for interactive exhibits to spark their imagination.
Camping
Camping is the classic summer activity. There are many skills that you can teach your kids while camping like how to start a fire, build a shelter and camp cooking. While camping you can also do all the other activities on the list, so go camping, hang out with your family and teach them about the world around them.
