While camping you can cook the same meals you would have at home using a grill. But, where’s the fun in that here’s a list of fun meals your kids can help you prepare when camping. Sure you can cook them at home but it’s more fun to do it the camping way.
Baked Potatoes
What you’ll need:
- Potatoes
- Fork
- Aluminum foil
- A hot campfire
Take the potatoes and poke them full of holes with a fork. Once full of holes wrap them in the foil and toss them into the hot coals under the fire. Use the coals to cook and not the flame. The coals are hotter and will cook faster. You can bury them in the coals or place them on top. If placed on top make sure to rotate them half way through cooking. It takes 30 minutes to an hour to cook depending on how hot your fire is.
Hot dogs/ Italian Sausage/ Brats
What you’ll need:
- Whichever meat you choose
- Cooking sticks
Hot dogs are the easiest here since they are often precooked and you don’t need to worry much about their internal temperature. Toss your meat on a stick and hold it over the flames. Rotate it for even cooking. Kids will love having a chance to cook their own food and it’s easy cleanup so you can go off to your other camping activities.
Egg Bags
What you’ll need:
- Eggs
- Optional Toppings:
- Cheese
- Precooked meat; ham, bacon, sausage, etc.
- Veggies
- Resealable freezer bags
- Large pot of water
- Cooking hear source
Start with putting the water on to boil. I use the grill for this but it’s possible to boil water over a fire, it just takes longer. Crack some eggs and put them in the freezer bags, have your kids add whatever toppings they want. Then seal the bags and squish the eggs around to mix everything. Once ready, put the bags in the boiling water for about 5 minutes. Once finished carefully remove the bags from the pot and pour the omelettes onto a plate.
Breakfast Potatoes
What you’ll need:
- Potatoes
- Cheese
- Onions
- Your favorite seasonings
- Aluminum Foil
- Hot Campfire
This is similar to the baked potatoes but prepared differently. First cut your potatoes and onions into thin slices. Throw them into foil with the cheese and seasoning.
Beef Packs
Things you’ll need:
- Ground beef
- Carrots
- Potatoes
- Onions
- Aluminum Foil
- Seasoning
Thinly slice the carrots, onions and potatoes then have your kids throw them into the foil with some ground beef and seasoning. Toss the foil packs onto the fire and flip after a few minutes. Keep an eye on them and check to see if everything is cooked after about 10 minutes. You can eat right out of the foil.
